A Week in John 14: Questions

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 14:8-14 New International Version (NIV)

Sometimes our faith in Christ is looked upon as blind. Those who don't know Jesus or do not accept God as Creator, find these things foolish and unbelievable. In doing this, they disregard the miracle of the life they live even as they scoff. There is plenty of evidence that we have a Higher Power. God has done great things that cannot be explained. We may not understand it, but it is still so far beyond our control that it doesn't really matter whether we understand it or not. It just is, just as He just is. Jesus doesn't even take credit for what God does. He simply obeys the will of His Father. It is this obedience that pleased God to allow His only Son to die for the sin of mankind and be a reconciling force for the children He created to worship only Him. It is because of God in Christ that there was no one else worthy who could give His life to save us all from the certain death of sin.

We can spend our lives trying to figure everything out or we can believe that the Creator and Sustainer of life knows what He is doing and follow Him. Jesus has promised to give us anything we ask for in His name. This includes understanding. God sent His Son to make things right and He is working to do exactly that. We can ask Him for help to believe and increase our faith. We can stop trying to make sense of what we are incapable to decipher until He reveals to us what will be and trust Him to fulfill all of His promises. Eternal death is not the alternative to living in this world for those who believe in Christ everlasting life is. Jesus rose from that grave so that we could too.

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 1 Corinthians 1:27 NIV
