Finished

Posted on December 31, 2019 at 7:47 AM Comments comments (59)
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

John 19:28-30 NIV

It IS finished.  This does not just speak to us about another year coming to an end, but to what Jesus did on the Cross.  It is up to us to recognize that Jesus stopped the madness a long time ago. Let us see clearly in 2020. Only believe.

Teach Us to Love

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him.

1 John 4:16 NKJV

My Lord and My God,

You are holy, high and set apart as You observe the ways of mankind, whom You have created. You look low and reach down to lift us up. All things are subject to Your will, even as You give us a choice to obey Your commands. Even still, You sent Your Son, Jesus, to save us in spite of the bad choices we make. You are love and You show us how to love through Your mercy and never-failing grace.Help us to live, Lord God. Teach us to love.

I thank You, Heavenly Father, for who You are and for Your willingness to be Lord of my life. I cannot live without the breath You give to sustain me. You have forgiven my sin and I pray to be a whole and useful vessel for You. As I fall short, I ask that You use the experience for my good. Thank You for bringing me to this day. Thank You for closing old doors and opening new ones.  Continue to shine Your light on our darkness and bring us through. Bless us with opportunities that can only come from You. Grant us favor. Be with those who do not love and teach their hearts how to love, for even as I pray to learn to love more fully I often need Your guidance to truly do it like You do. But I am grateful to You for simply giving me the desire to love. Prepare us, Lord God, for the next endeavor in our lives. We need Your help to do anything right. Bless us, Lord I pray, with all we need to bring you glory.

Through Christ I pray. Amen.

I Pray With David

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Psalm 16:1-2, 5-11 NIV

In the matchless name of Jesus I pray.
Amen.

Which Way?

This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”

Isaiah 48:17 NIV

These days most people have access to GPS applications to give direction.  They are so much more accurate and easier to use in navigation than the paper maps of former days.  However, with everyone's head bent down toward their cell phones, it's a wonder we get anywhere without losing our way or crashing into something!  Yet, many still pray to God for direction and ordered steps to get where they would like to go in life.  We can thank the Lord for all the current technology that guides us to our desired destinations in travel, but even without this help, God is still the Source that we should follow. With all the earthly assistance we now have to chart our courses in this world, it is God who actually directs and ultimately determines if we will make it to any destination we seek.  No matter where we think we're going, His way will always lead us to the best place for us.

What Does God Want?

What should I bring before the Lord when I come to bow before God on high? Should I come before him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves? Would the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousand streams of oil? Should I give my firstborn for my transgression, the offspring of my body for my own sin?

Mankind, he has told each of you what is good and what it is the Lord requires of you:  to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:6-8 Christian Standard Bible-CSB

What can we give to the Creator of all that exists?  Everything is already His except what He decided to leave with us to choose to give back.  He wants our free will to act justly, love faithfulness and to walk humbly with Him. That's it! But this will take devoting our lives and surrendering to Him our hearts.

Forever in the End

Jesus began to answer them, “Be careful that no one fools you. Many people will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the One,’ and they will fool many people. When you hear about wars and stories of wars that are coming, don’t be afraid. These things must happen before the end comes. Nations will fight against other nations, and kingdoms against other kingdoms. There will be earthquakes in different places, and there will be times when there is no food for people to eat. These things are like the first pains when something new is about to be born.

You must be careful. People will arrest you and take you to court and beat you in their synagogues. You will be forced to stand before kings and governors, to tell them about me. This will happen to you because you follow me. But before these things happen, the Good News must be told to all people."

Mark 13:5-10 New Century Version-NCV

God's plan is beyond our comprehension. His ways are not our ways. Yet, as we see certain things happening in the world, many are blessed to see them while being covered from the actual experience. Still others are recovered from the disaster and live to testify of God's goodness for He is indeed on the other side of whatever trouble that comes. Jesus came not only to save us but to prepare us and He enlists our help in the preparation of others.  What do we get for doing our part here?  We get forever with God when this part is over.

Pride

The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

Obadiah 3-4 NIV

What is in us who have created nothing of true value in life that causes us to be prideful?  Through whatever means we have gained anything deemed good, how can we assert that we deserve more good than someone else?  If we do not keep in mind that but for the grace of God we all would sit in the lowest places of this world, God has declared He will bring us down to show us. Pride comes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18).

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:16 NIV

You are Worthy!

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Revelation 4:11 NIV

Thank You, Lord, for who You are and who we are in You. We give You praise.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Bad News

Posted on October 17, 2019 at 8:01 AM Comments comments (0)
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

Philippians 1:20-24 NIV

When someone dies it is often expressed by those who are still alive as bad news. However, according to the Gospel, this information is actually a part of the Good News because this is when eternal life begins.  When we lose someone we love or simply appreciate, it is a loss for us.  We may even look around us and wonder why so much evil is allowed to thrive when one of our soldiers of truth are called Home. Yet, God has numbered our days and appointed us to a purpose for His glory during the time He gives us to live.  We will grieve the death of someone special, but joy does come in the morning (and mourning).  We can rejoice in the fact that their work in this fallen world is done. We who still live just need to remember that those who now sleep in Christ, will one day live in Christ forever.

Rest in peace, Elijah Cummings.

Greatest Commandments

Posted on October 16, 2019 at 7:48 AM Comments comments (0)
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied:
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Matthew 22:36-40 NIV

People often search the Scriptures looking for commandments that condemn someone else.  We sometimes seek to find confirmation to justify our own self-righteous indignation of what is or is not the sin of our fellow man. Jesus came to teach us where to begin and how we are to receive the Word of God.  He summed it up very simply: Love God and love your neighbor.  When we obey these two commandments with all our hearts, we will indeed be covering everything else.
